We all know that divorce is the legal process of ending a marriage, but there may be some things you don’t know about divorce. Ultimately, it can be a complex legal process, especially if you share children with your spouse, and, of course, the laws vary depending on which state you live in. But beyond the legality of ending a marriage, here are some strange and interesting facts about divorce that you’ve probably never heard before.
Divorce in the White House
Even though divorce is common in America, we hold elected officials to a different standard. So far, the American people have only elected two presidents who were divorced before being sworn into office, including Ronald Reagan and our current president. We can only speculate, but it may have something to do with their celebrity status.
The Highest Divorce Rate
While the United States has one of the highest divorce rates, it’s not at the top of the list. According to the UN, the Maldives actually ranks first in the world, which seems ironic given that the small island nation in the Arabian Sea is a popular honeymoon destination. Even so, the US ranks higher than many other developed countries in this category.
Dating Apps
The divorce rate is falling in the United States, although it isn’t because people are staying married longer. These days, young millennials are more selective in choosing lifelong partners than previous generations. This might have something to do with the popularity of dating apps.
Divorce Facts About Child Support
Child support after divorce presents a shocking picture. CBS found that not even half of the payments for child support are fully paid off. Worse still, over 30% of these types of payments aren’t paid at all. This doesn’t help an emotionally charged situation and probably doesn’t bode well for the economy.
Marriage and Gender
Surprisingly, more men than women would prefer to remarry. One study found that while 30% of men who were either widowed or divorced wouldn’t choose to marry again, the statistic is 54% for women. This paints a different picture than what is stereotypically portrayed in movies and on television.
