Custody and Visitation During COVID-19

by | Aug 10, 2020 | Uncategorized, Custody

The Covid-19 pandemic has been one of the most tumultuous events in modern times. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event that doesn’t really have any firm precedent in family law. Many people have been affected in different ways, especially economically. Across the globe, small businesses and lower-income families are struggling to keep it together. This is having a negative impact on the overall economy. The situation is also affecting single parents who pay or receive child support. If you’re having trouble with custody and visitation during the COVID-19 pandemic, read on to learn more.

How Are Custody and Visitation Affected by Covid-19?

If you have concerns about custody and visitation, the most direct approach is to simply talk to the other parent. In most instances, the desire for the child’s well-being will override emotional concerns and both parents can agree on an outcome that is best for the child.

One parent may be at greater risk for the coronavirus. For example, healthcare workers who treat COVID-19 patients. Another concern may be that another family member is more vulnerable, such as an elderly grandparent who lives in the home. If you have a valid concern that the current custody and visitation order puts your child at risk for contracting the virus, don’t be afraid to voice it. Talk to the other parent in a calm and rational manner to try to reach an agreement.

If the other party is not willing to work with you, things can be a little trickier, but there are still options. It’s important to document everything and to have a firm reason for wishing to modify the established custody or visitation orders. Gather as much information as you can and be as thorough as possible. Consulting with an attorney versed in family law is a great way to ensure that all your bases are covered. A professional can help you reach your desired outcome, and avoid legal pitfalls.
